Chikmagalur is a scenic town located in Karnataka state of India. It lies in the valley of Mullayanagiri range surrounded with coffee plantations. There is no particular season to visit Chikmagalur. Tourists are welcome throughout the year. There are many tourist places in Chikmagalur, which can attract any travel maniacs. Some of the all time favourite spots in the town include Sringeri Sharada Peetha, Mullayanagiri, Baba Budan Giri Hills, and Hebbe Falls.
Sringeri Sharada Peetha
Sringeri Sharada Peetha, also known as Dakshinamnaya Sharada Peetham, is one of the four Hindu Advaita Maths established by Adi Shankaracharya. The Math follows the principles of Yajur Veda, described by Krishna. As per the Math culture established by Adi Shankaracharya, the head is called Jagadguru, teacher of the world. Jagadguru also carries Shankaracharya as a title in his name. The seat of transcendental wisdom, known as Vyakhyana Simhasana, is presently held by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswami. He is 36th in the unbroken lineage of Acharyas, and oversees Math activities and works to sustain Sanatana Dharma, while preaching thousands of disciples. A sculpture of Goddess Sharada, the Goddess of Knowledge, is established in the shrine by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Situated in the midst of lush green mountain ranges of the Sahyadri, the town of Sringeri can be approached by road.
Baba Budan Giri Hills
Baba Budan Giri Hills, famous for its distinct forest range, is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Muslims. The hill range, also known as Dattagiri Hill Range, is popular among tourists keen on hiking and trekking. Dattagiri along with Mullayanagiri are two famous mountain ranges of the region. Located 25 km north of Chikmagalur town, the mountain range features beautiful shrines. Adventure seekers can hike through the forest to visit the historic shrine of Deviramma Betta. In addition to this, the hills such as Sitalayanna Giri provide scenic views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
Located in the Western Ghats, the range is a part of Chandradrona mountain range. The highest peak in the Baba Budan Giri Hills is Mullayanagiri, standing at an altitude of 1,930 metres. Moreover, the first ever coffee cultivation in the country was carried out on sylvan slopes of this range in 1670 AD. Tourists can walk along the coffee plantations, during the flowering season in the months of March and April.
Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, is located in the Baba Budan Giri Range of the Western Ghats. Standing at an altitude of 1930 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris after Chembra, Banasura and Vellari Mala peaks in Kerala. Tourists can relax at this site that maintains a temperature between 200 Celsius and 250 Celsius. The mountain range features grasslands, rugged rocks along the trek path and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on its peak. The trek route begins from Sarpadaari, which is connected with Chikmagalur by road. For adventure enthusiasts, the location offers an opportunity to engage in activities like mountain biking, trekking and road biking.
Inam Dattatreya Peetha
Inam Dattatreya Peetha, located on the Baba Budan Giri Hills, is a revered place for Hindus as well as Muslims. The holy place in a cave is a symbol of brotherhood. The cave at Inam Dattatreya Peetha is believed to have sheltered Guru Dattatreya and Hazrat Dada Hayath Mir Khalandar, who was a Muslim saint sent to India by Prophet Muhammad.
The site hosts three day annual celebrations, known as 'Urs' in the month of Rabi-ul-Avval, third month of the Islamic calendar. On the other hand, Hindu devotees visit the site during the Kartik Poornima celebrations, marking Dattatreya's Jayanti. At present, the site is maintained by a fakir (Muslim Sufi ascetic). Inam Dattatreya Peetha can be approached either from Chikmagalur or Kemmangundi. These are situated at a distance of 28 km and 24 km respectively, from the site of worship.
Hebbe Falls, located 8 km away from Kemmangundi, is a favourite site for solitude seekers. The waterfalls is situated at an altitude of 168 metres. Like other spring falls in the region, the water stream is believed to cure skin disorders. Enriched with minerals, the water stream is also a source of drinking water in the region.
On striking a rock, the waterfall diverges into two separate water streams. Among these diverging streams, the smaller one is known as Chikka Hebbe, whereas, the bigger one is known as Dodda Hebbe. Tourists can advance to Kemmangundi to reach the waterfalls either by a walk or a four-wheeler vehicle. Besides, tourists can also trek a steep and narrow path of 8 km to reach the site.
